|Sunday, August 24th through Monday, August 25th
Hi everyone! We arrived safely in Kazakhstan and we’re having an incredible experience! Our adoption journey continues to be amazing.
Our plane ride was smooth but very long. Counting our layover, our journey took eighteen hours. We were exhausted but excited when we landed in Almaty, Kazakhstan at 11 p.m. Getting luggage and going through customs was a snap and we were then met by our driver, Vitaly! He is Russian and is wonderful. The drivers are provided by World Partners Adoption Agency and take excellent care of the adoptive families. They drive you anywhere that you want to go anytime of the day or night. They also translate for you at stores and restaurants if necessary. We are staying in an excellent apartment in Almaty that is very spacious and is very comfortable! As soon as we arrived in our apartment, we were so tired that we couldn’t wait to sleep. However, both of us found little rest as it was difficult to sleep while thinking that tomorrow we would meet our precious daughter. We kept waking up every hour just like two young children waiting for the arrival of Santa Claus. We knew that something wonderful was about to happen that would change our life forever and we couldn’t contain our enthusiasm!!
Tuesday, August 26th
The big day arrived!!! We nervously dressed and packed up baby toys and diapers. All we could think of was that we’d been on the adoption path for over two years now and we’d finally made it - we were going to meet our daughter! Our driver Vitaly picked us up promptly at 9:15 a.m. and after a brief meeting with our facilitator, Gulbanu (she’s great by the way and beautiful, too) that included signing some papers, we were whisked off to Babyhouse #2 in Almaty! The Babyhouse is very nice and looks more like a daycare center than an orphanage.
The Babyhouse Director and all of the caretakers were extremely sweet and all warned us that our precious, Dana, would most likely cry when she first met us because she has stranger and separation anxiety. Her chief caretaker brought her to us in the music room. As soon as we approached her, Dana let out a high note that we bet even Celine Dion couldn’t hit. She cried and cried. Her caretaker smiled at us as if to say, “I warned you” and handed her to us as she promptly left the room. Dana continued to cry for what seemed like an eternity as we did everything we could think of - we patted her back, we rubbed her back, we kissed her, we talked to her, we rocked her, we jiggled her, we sang to her, we pulled out an endless array of toys, we played music and FINALLY , she started to relax and allowed us to dry her tears. She wouldn’t give us a smile but she stopped crying and began to look interested in us.
She loved to put things in her mouth and especially liked the Winnie - the - Pooh teething blanket that we brought. She eventually laid her head on Mommy’s shoulder while she was holding that blanket - sheer heaven!! The most unique thing about our little doll was that she immediately stopped crying when you take a photo or video of her. What a ham!!
Our visit only lasted about an hour and was over far too soon. Dana cried when the caretaker took her away from us and her caretaker laughed. We don’t think that it took Dana long to figure out that we absolutely adore her!! She now knows that she has the two of us wrapped around her little finger and she loves the attention. This was definitely a great day!!!! CONTINUED
